Director of Health Services (Public Health Unit)

The Department is responsible for the provision of preventive and curative health services through general nursing care and clinical care and provision of medical equipment, and pharmaceutical services. The Department is also responsible for implementing programmes and projects aimed at preventing, controlling and eliminating diseases in order to promote health and prolong life.

 The Department performs the following specific functions:

Provide clinical care services;

Provide nursing care and pharmaceutical services;

Control of communicable diseases and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs);

Provide counselling and testing services;

Control and elimination of malaria;

Provide child health programmes;

Provide vaccination services;

Ensure availability of medical equipment in health facilities;

Provide environmental health services;

Provide maternal health services;

Provide family planning, counselling and dispensing of family planning commodities;

Provide nutrition services;

Conduct health education programmes;

Conduct disease surveillance programmes; and

Manage ambulance services.

1. Health Services Section

The Health Services Section is responsible for coordinating the provision of preventive and curative health services through general nursing care, clinical care, medical equipment, and pharmaceutical services. The Section is also responsible for overseeing operations of District Hospitals, Mini Hospitals, Zonal Health Centres, Health Centres and Health Posts.

The Unit is responsible for coordinating the provision of clinical, pharmaceutical and diagnostic services in the District. It also oversees the provision of biomedical services. The Unit performs the following specific functions:

Coordinate the provision of clinical, pharmaceutical and diagnostic services in the hospital in order to facilitate delivery of quality health care;

Provide curative services in the out and in-patient departments;

Provide Medical Imaging Services;

Provide pharmaceutical and ambulance/referral services;

Provide maternal, neonatal, Child, Adolescent and nutrition services;

Conduct performance assessment and quality assurance/improvement (QA/QI) for public health;

Provide surgical and rehabilitative services;

Provide outreach health services;

Conduct Technical Supportive Supervision (TSS);

Conduct Performance Assessments and Service Quality Assessment;

Monitor implementation of Quality Improvement Projects;

Provide mortuary services;

Maintain of medical equipment;

Coordinate the conduct of research in clinical care, pharmaceutical and diagnostic service in order to generate evidence to inform decision making; and

Coordinate with key stakeholders in medical education in order to enhance training of health workers.

The Unit performs the following specific functions:

Promote intersectoral collaboration on environmental health in order to contribute to better health outcomes;

Provide guidelines on healthcare waste management (HCW);

Develop and disseminate guidelines on Disease Control and Environmental Health;

Conduct and monitor the implementation of participatory hygiene and sanitation programmes in the District;

Coordinate epidemic preparedness, prevention, control and management of diseases including emergencies/disasters;

Conduct performance assessment of nursing and midwifery services in health facilities in the district;

Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to develop and implement adaptation plans to reduce the effect climate change on human health;

Advocate for safe environments and Habitat to support disease prevention and control;

Manage the waste management systems in order to ensure effective collection, transportation, storage and final disposal of solid waste in the district.

infectious diseases in order to improve quality of life of the communities.

Conduct public awareness, health education and enforcing the Public Health Act in order to sensitise communities on matters of public health;

Conduct pest and vector control;

The Section is responsible for implementing programmes and projects aimed at preventing, controlling and eliminating diseases in order to promote health and prolong life. The Section is also  responsible for solid waste management and provision of public health education programmes. The following are the core functions of the Section

Implement programmes and projects aimed at preventing, controlling and eliminating diseases in the District in order to promote health and prolong life;

Implement Environmental Health, Port Health, Food and Drugs policies and legislation in order to mitigate occurrence of disease outbreaks;

Conduct inspections in the areas of food safety and occupational Health, mitigate nuisances and eliminate infectious diseases in adherence to health standards;

Administer cemeteries, crematoria and provide burial services in order to ensure safe and sanitary disposal of human remains.
