Today, Solwezi Municipal Council (SMC) women Officers made a donation of 275 sanitary pads to female pupils at Kyafukuma and St. Charles Secondary Schools. The initiative was made possible through financial and material contributions made by both male and female Council Officers to purchase the sanitary towels and make the donation as part of the buildup leading to the Women’s Day commemoration this Friday the 8th.
The donation aimed at promoting female personal hygiene, contribute to combating period poverty and to educate, sensitize and create awareness on the importance of menstrual hygiene so that it does not affect their class activities.
During the donation at both schools, the District AIDS Coordination Advisor Ms Lydia Malasha held an interactive session with the pupils on menstrual hygiene, sexual and reproductive health, how to use and dispose of pads and the dangers of early marriages and pregnancies.
The pupils were encouraged to work hard at school as education is a sacrifice and an investment by the parents.
Meanwhile, Kyafukuma Secondary School Deputy Head-teacher Mr Edson Fwalanga expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable support for the girl child received from the Local Authority recognizing their vital role in community development through provision of essential materials to the needy and vulnerable school going children.
He also thanked the Council for the shared goal to ensure the female pupils can confidently remain in school throughout the month, fostering positive educational outcomes.# Invest in women and girls; accelerate progress
