Solwezi Municipal Council is this week set to commission nine projects constructed under the Ward Development Fund (WDF), targeting improvements in health, education and markets.
Today, His Worship the Mayor of Solwezi, Mr. Remmy Kalepa, handed over a newly built 2-in-1 staff house at Dawson Kafwaya Primary School. The project, constructed using the 2023 Ward Development Fund seeks to ease the critical shortage of teachersβ accommodation in the district.
Mr. Kalepa noted that the challenge has been compounded by the introduction of the free education policy, which has led to increased pupil enrolments and the subsequent recruitment of more teachers. He explained that through WDF, the Council is responding to development priorities identified by communities, including education infrastructure.
He further highlighted that his office operates an open door policy aimed at nurturing social and economic growth in the district, attributing the current wave of infrastructure development to the progressive policies of the New Dawn Government under President Hakainde Hichilema.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, represented by Sub Chief Jowell Kankansa, Group Leader Jupita Juma, Senior Headman Sendwe Mulowanyama, the CDF committee members, Council officers, and residents of Kifubwa Ward, amomg other notable officials.
Tomorrow, the Mayor is expected to commission additional projects, including ablution blocks and staff houses in Kivuku and Kyafukuma wards.
These facilities are expected to bring tangible benefits to the communities by improving sanitation standards, enhancing the learning environment, and addressing accommodation shortages for teachers and health workers.
Improved sanitation will help reduce waterborne diseases, while better housing and education infrastructure will contribute to staff retention, ultimately raising the quality of service delivery in schools and health facilities across the district.
