Solwezi Municipal Council was on 16th August, at Kyawama Market to commemorate the 2025 African Day of Decentralisation which was graced by His Worship the Mayor Mr Remmy Kalepa in the company of Kyawama ward Councillor Mr Kakoma Mutoshi.
The commemoration, held at Kyawama Market, was filled with performances of dance, drama, cultural showcases, and music, reflecting the unity and diversity of the community. The day’s highlight included heartfelt testimonials from Constituency Development Fund (CDF) beneficiaries who shared how the fund has transformed their lives.
Adding an exciting twist to the programme, the Council’s fire brigade thrilled the crowd with an epic fire drill, demonstrating techniques for putting out fires and reinforcing the importance of public safety.
Exhibitions also continued as part of the commemoration. The Mayor, accompanied by his entourage, toured various stands to appreciate the range of services provided under decentralised departments and council programmes.
In his remarks, Mayor Kalepa highlighted notable achievements recorded through decentralisation, citing the CDF empowerment and bursary components that have supported over 2,800 beneficiaries from 2022 to date.
Speaking on behalf of the Town Clerk, Acting Director of Housing and Social Services, Mrs. Exhildah Kabutu, noted that decentralisation has truly brought services closer to the people, with communities now able to access opportunities and support that were previously out of reach.
The African Day of Decentralisation, commemorated annually, provides a platform for local authorities to celebrate progress while reaffirming their commitment to building resilient and inclusive communities through equitable development.
