Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Gift Sialubalo, has launched the 2025 African Day of Decentralisation and Local Development at the Solwezi Council Chamber under the theme β€œBuilding Resilient Communities through Inclusive Decentralisation and Equitable Development.”

He noted Zambia’s progress in bringing governance closer to the people, including:
βœ… 116 elected councils with 1,858 Ward Development Committees and 156 CDF Committees
βœ… CDF increased from K1.6m to K36.1m per constituency
βœ… 13 functions devolved from 8 ministries to local authorities
βœ… All councils now have Integrated Development Plans
βœ… Nearly 40,000 civil servants deployed to perform devolved functions
Minister Sialubalo urged district leaders to manage resources prudently and ensure these gains translate into real improvements in people’s lives.
Commemorated annually on 10th August, African Day of Decentralisation and Local Development provides a platform for Zambia and the African continent to reflect on progress in empowering local communities and building inclusive, equitable development through decentralised governance.

Following the launch, the 2025 Local Government Week will run from 10th to 16th August, a period dedicated to raising public awareness on the functions and services of local authorities.
