Solwezi Mayor, Mr. Remmy Kalepa, yesterday visited the Kyafukuma satellite depot to appreciate the impressive bumper harvest recorded in the Kyafukuma community and to check on the Food Reserve Agencyโs (FRA) ongoing white maize purchase in Solwezi district.
Mr. Kalepa expressed happiness over the positive response from farmers to President Hakainde Hichilemaโs call for citizens to return to farming and boost national food security.
He noted that Kyafukuma has long been the districtโs โfood basketโ and urged farmers to continue working hard, highlighting that government has played its part by delivering farming inputs on time to support increased production.
The Mayor was impressed that, since FRA began buying maize at Kyafukuma on 17th July 2025, the depot has already purchased over 3,510 bags of white maize in just two months.
He said the strong yields give confidence that hunger will not be an issue for the community this year.
Mr. Kalepa further encouraged farmers to take advantage of the Ministry of Agricultureโs mechanization program to prepare larger fields and boost future production.
He reminded them that government is purchasing white maize at K340 per 50kg bag and urged them to make full use of this opportunity.
The Mayor was accompanied on the visit by Kyafukuma Ward Councillor, Mr. Fickson Mwanaute, and two officers from the District Agriculture office.
