Solwezi District has made significant progress in preparing for this year’s World Environmental Day, which will be commemorated on 5th June. As part of the build up to the event, the district has organized a range of activities aimed at raising awareness about environmental issues, particularly plastic pollution.
Key activities include a dedicated radio program, community clean up efforts around town, and school debates designed to engage young people in environmental advocacy.
The debate competition has attracted participation from over ten schools across the district.
In the semi finals held today, Solwezi Trades Secondary School faced Kyawama Secondary School, while Solwezi Technical Secondary School (Soltech) competed against Kikombe Secondary School.
After closely contested debates, Solwezi Trades and Kikombe emerged victorious and will face each other in the finals on Tuesday 3rd June to determine the 2025 World Environmental Day Debate Champions for the district.
These debates are not just competitions, they serve as an important platform for raising awareness about plastic pollution among students and the wider community.
Schools play a crucial role in information dissemination, and involving them in such initiatives helps amplify the message on the urgent need to end plastic pollution.
This year, World Environmental Day is being observed under the theme: Ending Plastic Pollution.
